When metal meets flame, it undergoes a remarkable transformation. Steel softens, surrendering to the heat and becoming as malleable as clay, yet infinitely more dangerous.

Glowing a fierce yellow, it can be shaped and moulded, but only with the right tools — hands-on contact would be fatal. This softened state allows for the creation of intricate designs that showcase the metal’s unique “squishiness.”

“The squishiness and plasticity of steel enable limitless creativity; organic forms emerge naturally under the hammer’s blow,” says Paolo Riva, Founder of Rootfire, Maker-in-Residence, and a long-standing member of the FabLab.
