With over two decades of experience in manufacturing and engineering, Richard has seamlessly integrated into our creative community, bringing with him a passion for merging technology with traditional craftsmanship. His expertise shines in his unique approach to fulfilling the diverse requests of makers.
We had the opportunity to sit down with Richard to delve into his career, his experiences as the Maker-in-Residence, and the impact he’s making at the FabLab.
Starting Out
Richard’s journey began at Red River Polytechnic, where he graduated from the manufacturing technician program and embraced the world of manufacturing and engineering. His career evolved from manual machining and CNC operating to a role that merged hands-on work with engineering design, including 3D modeling and fixture design.
Life as the Maker-in-Residence
As the Maker-in-Residence, Richard is the first point of contact for project requests submitted through the North Forge website. His role involves assessing the feasibility of these requests, either taking them on himself or leveraging the FabLab’s community to find the right skill set among the members. This position has allowed him to work on a wide array of projects, including the heartwarming task of designing a prosthetic for a pet sheep named Francie, showcasing the unique challenges and rewards of his role.
Joining the FabLab Community
Richard’s path to becoming a FabLab member started with a simple tour that sparked his interest in joining this vibrant community. His background in DIY projects and his entrepreneurial spirit found a perfect home at the FabLab, where he has been able to both learn and apply new skills. The variety of projects he undertakes reflects his adaptability and willingness to explore new challenges, underscored by his frequent use of 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC routers.
The Essence of the FabLab
Describing the FabLab as a 24/7 gym membership for creators, Richard praises the accessibility to an extensive range of manufacturing equipment and the invaluable community of like-minded individuals. The diverse membership, from students to retired professionals, fosters a rich environment for learning, collaboration, and innovation.
Why Join the FabLab?
According to Richard, the FabLab is more than just a workspace; it’s a launchpad for success, offering resources for prototyping, product development, and networking with a supportive community. It’s a place where anyone, from hobbyists to entrepreneurs, can come to bring their ideas to life.
