In a historic step for Canadian innovation, RRC Polytech, with North Forge as a collaborating partner, has been selected to lead a national network of post-secondary institutions and organizations focused on advancing entrepreneurship and research commercialization. This initiative, supported by $24.1 million in federal funding over five years through a Lab to Market grant, represents the largest tri-council grant ever awarded to a college in Canada.
A Partnership for Innovation
This initiative is part of a $95.3 million national innovation strategy to bridge the gap between academic research and real-world solutions. With North Forge President and CEO Joelle Foster contributing to the round-table discussions, the collaboration underscores the vital role of connecting industry with academia to accelerate economic growth and innovation.
“At North Forge, we’ve seen how fostering partnerships between research and industry creates opportunities for innovation that benefit communities and businesses alike,” said Foster.
Empowering Indigenous Entrepreneurs
A foundational aspect of this initiative is the commitment to supporting Indigenous entrepreneurs. Tailored mentorship and resources, alongside adherence to OCAP® principles, ensure that Indigenous communities are empowered to turn their ideas into impactful businesses.
The creation of Mittohnee Pogo’ohtah, one of three Indigenous hubs within the network, highlights this commitment and sets a precedent for inclusivity in innovation.
A Collaborative Network
RRC Polytech’s leadership brings together 38 post-secondary institutions and a wide range of collaborators, including North Forge, to create a Canada-wide network spanning eight regional hubs. This diverse approach, integrating both colleges and universities, maximizes strengths across disciplines and industries.
“Canada is home to world-class researchers who generate groundbreaking technologies,” said the Hon. François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry. “Through these networks, researchers will receive the support they need to bring their innovations to market, benefiting communities coast to coast.”
North Forge’s Role in the Ecosystem
As a key player in this entrepreneurial ecosystem, North Forge brings its expertise in supporting startups and scaling businesses. Its involvement underscores the importance of collaboration in transforming academic research into viable market solutions.
Looking Ahead
This initiative is a significant milestone in Canada’s journey toward fostering an entrepreneurial ecosystem that drives innovation, supports Indigenous businesses, and enhances global competitiveness.
Congratulations to RRC Polytech and all partners, including North Forge, for their commitment to building a brighter future for Canadian innovation. Together, we’re shaping the next chapter of research commercialization and economic growth.
