At North Forge, we take pride in the groundbreaking work of our founders. One of our standout members, Tillwell, was recently featured in the Winnipeg Free Press for their groundbreaking approach to after-death care with alkaline hydrolysis, also known as aquamation. This eco-friendly alternative to flame cremation underscores the innovation and environmental stewardship that North Forge fosters among its entrepreneurs.
Leading the Way in Sustainable After-Death Care
Tillwell, led by Dwayne Till and co-founder Quinn Hunter, is set to become Manitoba’s first provider of human aquamation. After navigating a challenging approval process that spanned over 18 months, Tillwell received its crematory license in December 2024. This marks a pivotal moment not only for the company but also for the province’s funeral industry, which is embracing greener alternatives to traditional practices.
Alkaline hydrolysis uses heated water and alkali to break down organic materials, producing a result similar to traditional cremation ashes but with significantly less environmental impact. This innovative process minimizes energy use and eliminates harmful emissions, aligning with Tillwell’s mission to have a “net positive impact on people.”
Expanding Offerings for Families and Communities
Tillwell’s services will include two aquamation packages, one of which features a unique memorial tree planting option in partnership with arborists. This visionary offering provides families the opportunity to commemorate loved ones while contributing to Manitoba’s green infrastructure. By blending innovation with environmental consciousness, Tillwell sets a new standard for meaningful, sustainable after-death care.
Recognizing a North Forge Success Story
From securing B Corp status to donating a portion of revenue to tree-planting initiatives, their commitment to social and environmental responsibility is inspiring. The Winnipeg Free Press article highlights the years of determination and collaboration that have propelled Tillwell to this milestone.
