Despite rapid growth in Canada’s tech industry, women and gender-diverse individuals remain significantly underrepresented, particularly in leadership roles. In Manitoba, where female tech founders are the lowest in Canada, grassroots initiatives are rising to the challenge, fostering a more inclusive and dynamic ecosystem.
Programs like North Forge’s Women in Innovation Lab (WiLab™), WeMB, and MBWiTech are leading the charge. Launched in March 2023, WiLab™ has supported over 225 women entrepreneurs with mentorship, workshops, and community-building. WeMB, active since 1994, provides essential services like advising, financing, and training. MBWiTech fosters networking and a sense of community through monthly meetups, helping women navigate the challenges of a male-dominated field.
With only 16% of Canadian SMEs owned by women and less than 2% of venture capital funding going to women-led startups, programs like WiLab™ are addressing systemic issues. Offering financial acumen workshops, pitching guidance, and leadership training, these initiatives are leveling the playing field for women in tech and entrepreneurship.
Men are increasingly stepping up as allies, recognizing that inclusion strengthens the tech industry. Grassroots movements in Manitoba are setting the standard, but continued support from investors and policymakers is vital for long-term success.
