DANIEL CRUMP / FREE PRESS FILES. REES is a digital platform designed for reporting incidents of sexual harassment, misconduct, and assault occurring on post-secondary campuses as well as in other public areas.

Sexual violence remains a pressing issue across the globe, and access to safe, anonymous reporting tools is crucial in addressing it. A recent article by the Winnipeg Free Press highlights the incredible work of Winnipeg entrepreneur and founder Mary Lobson and her platform, REES (Respect, Educate, Empower Survivors), which provides survivors with a secure way to report incidents and connect with support services.

Bringing Change Beyond Borders

Originally developed in partnership with Manitoba’s post-secondary institutions, REES has grown significantly since its launch. Today, it is making an impact far beyond Canada, reaching universities in the U.S. and Australia and even exploring expansion into Nigeria.

What makes REES particularly powerful is its customizability—institutions and organizations can tailor the tool to their specific needs, ensuring survivors have direct access to relevant local resources. The platform also allows administrators to analyze reports, identify incident patterns, and take proactive measures to improve safety.

Bridging Technology and Social Impact

Beyond campuses, REES is now being utilized by music festivals, sports organizations, and workplaces across Canada. The U.S.-based Take Back the Night Foundation recently adopted it, broadening access to anonymous reporting and legal support for survivors across all 50 states.

This success is a testament to how technology can be leveraged for real social change. By breaking down barriers to reporting, REES is not only supporting survivors but also helping organizations take meaningful steps toward prevention.

Looking Ahead

As REES continues its global expansion, its impact will only grow. The platform’s latest partnerships, including a new collaboration with Lakeland College and ongoing work with the Association of Alberta Sexual Assault Services, are proof that institutions recognize the need for accessible and survivor-centric reporting tools.
